Catching Up

September 8th, 2011

Hi Everyone,

Some odds and ends in the spirit of September, which has me being pulled in four musical directions with three gigs in one week at the end of the month (all different repertoire too)!

Choir started up again yesterday, and I was greeted by the wonderful news that one of my compositions will be performed at our 15th Anniversary Gala concert on June 3rd, 2012 at Heliconian Hall in Yorkville. I’m not sure which one – likely, it will be one that we performed at the Lula Lounge in 2009, but I am quite excited. It’s still months away, and I’ll post details as it gets closer, of course.

Last weekend saw a reunion rehearsal of “Curse U Gravity”, a coverband project that began last year with three February Album Writing Month friends – Devin, Mark and Carlos. This year, we’ve also added the inspiring Leslie Hudson to the mix. Leslie and I have written and we performed together – I love singing with her and couldn’t be happier to have her involved. The five of us will be practicing weekly in preparation for our annual out of town gig on October 1st.

As usual, things have been busy on the “Debs & Errol” front – really, did you expect things to be different? The daily comics march on as usual – Errol outdid himself before he left for BC yesterday, completing them for the next two weeks!

We’ve also been gigging – last week we played a house concert for Errol’s boss’s wife, Bonnie. To honour her birthday, we even wrote her a parody song:

Our CD is moving along too. The mixing is taking longer than expected but for the best reasons. Our friend Erik, who is mixing for us, has been absolutely wonderful and very open to our feedback and suggestions. The process has become much more involved than we thought it would be – the end result will be quite fantastic!

Finally, on the solo front, easily forgotten in the midst of so many exciting collaborative efforts. I took some time out from everything else to write one yesterday. It has been a while since I’ve done that and it was nice to give myself a little breathing space. It’s called “Diamonds and Dreams” and you can listen to its demo here.

“Jetpack” Cover with Errol!

August 7th, 2011

Debs & Errol has been keeping me very busy lately. Today we made a cover video of “Jetpack” by Jill Sobule, requested by our friend D.J. Sylvis. We’ll be doing more of these in the coming weeks, as part of the donation packages for our upcoming CD.

Thursday’s Show

July 5th, 2011

Hi Everyone,

To those of you who might have been planning on making it out to this lovely event on Thursday, I am not sure if I’ll be able to play anymore. I might be flying overseas for one of those sad family things. I’ll keep you posted, though you should totally go anyway because it’ll be a wonderful evening either way.

“Rolling in the Deep” Cover

June 29th, 2011

Here’s a video of fellow-FAWMer Adam Hill and I performing “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele at Errol’s birthday party on June 18th! I can’t believe I hadn’t heard this song before he suggested it, but I was completely addicted to it within moments of hearing it. It’s a good, meaty, powerful song and infuses its strength. This one deserves repeated performing. Enjoy!

New Photos and a Show Announcement

June 24th, 2011

A few new images from Errol’s 40th Birthday Variety Show last weekend and my photoshoot with Bill Ivy a couple of weeks ago.

In show news, I am looking forward to performing alongside Adam Hill at an event on Thursday, July 7th at Willow Books. The evening will feature readings from two authors, Danila Botha (Got No Secrets, Tightrope Books) and Dawn Promislow (Jewels and Other Stories, TSAR Publications). If you’re in the area you should come on out!

Welcome to the New Site!

June 18th, 2011

Thanks for stopping by! This is version 3.0 of, and I think they keep getting better and better. My WordPress skills have been improving too, so I’ve been able to add all sorts of new features to the site including a photo gallery and a whole bunch of neat things on the sidebar.

I’d like to thank two wonderful friends of mine for helping me make it all happen. The first is photographer Bill Ivy who took many of the photographs in the gallery and also the header image. The second is my bandmate, Errol Elumir who has patiently been straightening out my many technological mishaps and teaching me along the way (for the pictorial version, check out today’s daily comic at Debs & Errol). I’ve learned so much that when I accidentally locked myself out of the admin panel this morning, I figured it out myself. He’s also hosting this site – you’ll notice as you browse that many of the URL’s have “geeklovesongs” thrown in, though that’ll be changed later once all the DNS severs everywhere have updated. Both Bill and Errol have given generously of their time and I’m really grateful.

I’ll be updating the site frequently with news, upcoming shows, photos and more. As always, feedback is welcome! Look around, listen to some music, and know that there’s a lot more to come!
